Annual CO₂ Emissions by Country
For most of the 20th century the United States was the world's largest emitter of carbon dioxide, powering its industrial rise on coal and oil. But China's breakneck growth changed everything: in 2006 it overtook the US, and by the 2020s it emitted more than the US and Europe combined, with India rising fast behind.
